Schmid Bello’s philosophical practice is rooted in transdisciplinarity, bridging art, science, and spirituality through media theory and aesthetic epistemology. His major work, Eingang/Ausgang (2022), presents a forty-two-chapter treatise across seven books, examining the relationship between language, sound, and digital existence. The book defines new concepts such as nomadic internet, inframediality and social space — positioning art as an expanded form of consciousness rather than representation.

His writings frame Transmodernity (since 2009) as the first XXI. Century epoch following the XX. Century postmodernism (in 4 waves: post-modernity (1948-1984), post-postmodernity or glocalisation (1984-2001), post-post-postmodernity or post-glocalisation (2001-2009) and the dangerous extension of the XX. Century into the XXI. Century wrongly adapted as the century of digital industrialization or second industrialization: neo-postmodernity or post-post-post-postmodernity (2009-2024)), defined by reflexive plurality, planetary ethics, and the unification of technological and spiritual narratives. Schmid Bello’s philosophy thus seeks to transcend postmodern fragmentation and restore a coherent dialogue between media, society, and human meaning.

Eingang/Ausgang (Zürich University of the Arts, 2022) was associated with the discourse surrounding Zürich’s designation as a Cultural Smart City by UNESCO. The work examines intersections of media art, philosophy, and urban infrastructure, presenting Zürich as a transdisciplinary “city-canvas” where digital, social, and aesthetic systems converge.

Through its discussion of transmedial and inframedial processes—linking artistic practice to technological and civic structures Eingang/Ausgang argues that cultural dimensions are essential to the sustainable development of cultural smart cities instead of the possible apocalyptic gentrified smart city hubs.
